i've always admired architects who could design curvy/ organic forms. and how they could do it with so much flare at minimal effort just astounds me with great amazement. i personally always find it hard to design or just to draw a curve for that matter. every time i attempted to do so, a little voice inside me tells me that i'm biting more than i can chew. those words from my father of how inefficient a curved building is in comparison to a rectilinear one haunts me and perhaps might had in some ways have stifled my creative potential. it would probably take me another 20 years before i start giving curves a chance. but who knows, it might come sooner than i think. although i am not deeply saddened by my lack of curvy ingenuity, however, i do hope that someday i would design or at least have an element of curve in some of my architecture, simply as a means to break the occasional monotony of the straight. i guess being raised by a structural engineer who is deeply rational and logical is very telling in my designs. apart from the fact that my designs tend to end up being very structurally rational and honest, the whole thought process always had the structural sensitivity in mind. i personally feel that the structure of the building has to be greatly monitored and be taken with great care of from the very beginning. a lot of architects i know tend to neglect this very aspect, perhaps its because they are just too busy or just plain negligence. whatever their reasons, i do feel the importance of understanding the structural in relation with the architectural design itself. it's really two sides of the same coin.

i fully agree with Oscar Niemeyer when he says that "it was up to architects to anticipate structural problems, so that by combining their imagination with technical sophistication they could create an architectural spectacle responsive to current trains of thought." but also the fact that our role as architects are to guide the structural engineers due to their "lack of imagination" in order to ensure harmony is achieved in the final product.

recently i have been receiving a lot of hate from my structural engineers, i had literally scrutinized their whole structural design... shifting every beam position, questioning every beam and column sizes and it's mere necessity, basically tidying up and dictating how the building's structural skeleton should look. but in my defense their drawings was a complete disaster, they were just too stubborn to admit it. so every day they try to coerced me accepting every flawed structural design and just cover it up with architectural cosmetics. just so they could avoid having to re-do/ refine their work.

and just the other day on site, the director of the structural engineer firm pulled me a side, he advised me that i should basically stop scrutinizing their design and just let them be. he was upset that i had literally changed the whole structural design rational and no architect should do such a thing. he justified this by telling me that nowadays the structure is calculated and design in a 3-d format, hence a lot of factor were put into consideration and a slight alteration would basically screw the whole thing up. i completely ignored his reasons, so he went on to explain that it's not because his engineers are useless, but it's because me as an architect is now trying to be an engineer. i failed to see and understand what he was trying to imply by that.

in the end, my response to him of my intention was purely to achieve harmony between the two disciplines and i had no intentions of undermining their work but simply to find a reasonable middle ground. before i had intervene, the structural design rational was designed completely tangent from the architectural form. and all i was doing was to try and bridge this incongruity. refining the structure to be more efficient and in-line with the architecture; re-adjusting the architecture to accommodate the structural limitations. he was speechless thereafter, and agreed to push harder to get it right.

so that, my friends, separates good architecture from the rest. negligence in the structure (which is the very essence of space creation), results in bad/ poor architecture.

i spent the last 2 days finishing kevin's long awaiting published book. i knew he was in the process of writing/ compiling this book since 2 years ago from a known insider and now that its out, i'm truly ecstatic. the book in itself is very refreshing, it's like i've known and seen his work but yet i've never really knew he really was all about. and after reading through thoughts, i've realised that i should not take for granted of the small things i've learnt and done over the pass years. it's truly in the small that one truly learns much. that got me remembering of a guard house that i once design for the condo back when i was in mkpl. it was an interesting task, as i was part reluctant to do, yet i had no other choice since i was the only person to design it. for starters, there was already a guard house design captured in the tender/ contract drawings. although it was very schematic and unresolved as the whole documentation was put together by different bits and pieces from all over. it was an odd guardhouse cladded with aluminium louvers (the most easiest of ways of designing by enveloping objects with screens). i never really liked the guardhouse design then. half way down in construction, finally the contractor starts asking for details of the guardhouse, ofcourse as a way of diverting the attention away from the architects, the finger was pointed to the lowest of sub-contractor to the task at hand of producing the shopdrawings for it. and so they did, a derivation from the schematic design intent drawings. months later after sitting on the shopdrawings, the contractor was finally intending to start fabricating the guardhouse. with great reluctance we pulled out the old submitted shopdrawings by the sub-contractor and realized how schematic it still really is. and so as responsible architects, we finally had to intervene, and it was a chance to relook into the whole design.

i of course as mentioned earlier was tasked to redesign the whole thing but bearing in mind that certain elements must still be retain to ensure a totalitarian design wholeness with the rest of the development. a small yet tricky assignment. during that time and had not put much thought into the rational of the whole design concept. but looking back it has really thought me about being a sensitive/ considerate designer to take into account that it wasnt a stand alone independent structure, instead it was a structure that must be contextually relevant, in this case the whole development.

the first move was trying to resolve the huge wall separating the turf slope from the guardhouse. the design intent had both the wall and guardhouse being two separate elements, leaving an odd gap inbetween. realizing that it was rediculous having it as separate entities, i decided to merge the two and made the wall into a sheer feature wall that would extend vertically upwards to catch the trellis. the next part was the guard house itself, with the sheer wall being a strong element, it made sense to make the guardhouse as a protruding element that depended on the wall as its structural support. with that it became two floating planes protruding horizontally from the wall. rather common strong gesture that most modern designs would do. then it was the task of reconsidering these aluminium screens that had no real purpose and just didnt make sense at all. i decided to strip off the screens leaving the guard house to its bare ugly unresolved fenestrations. the windows felt so pathetic without the screens that i decided to remove its whole elevation, leaving just solid and void planes. it was then an idea to make it into a floating glass box and cantilevered from the thick sheer wall. but the glass had to make resemblance to the rest of the development. immediately i decided to take precedent on the clear and opaque glass used to clad the lift cores. where the glass overlaps the solid walls it was opaque and where the lift car was it was clear glass. however, instead of following that principle, i decided to take advantage of the function of the guardhouse, where the guard requiring visual there it would be clear and the rest of the glass would be opaque. once that was establish, the design of the guardhouse in a way made relevance and sense to the whole development, just by using the glass element similar of use at the lift cores.

this whole exercise in a way was really important of being able to design in detail and understanding how things were put together. a conceptual thinking towards reality which made the design even stronger simply because it was feasible. unfortunately i was very poor at keeping documentation of the drawings that i had done, which was hand drawn and given to the contractor to produce the shopdrawings. but thankfully the design because it was drawn by my own hands is still very much in my mind (more or less).

here are a few quick sketches i've done that would had been compiled becoming the original detail design intent of the guardhouse.

interestingly enough, i had made a visit to the site one sunday after church. seeing that it was becoming into reality, the exact drawings i've drawn was so powerful. of course it was still incomplete and only the basic framing was up, but yet to know that i had design even until how i wanted the structural framework to look meant that it was a design that was fully thought out made me realise how much i've learnt over the past years. and not neglecting this small task/ project in hopes that it will be a capitalist for future works.

Under the Malaysian architectural form of contracts, contractors are duty bound to cross-check structural drawings against architectural intentions prior to construction. As a last line of defence against construction inaccuracy, it clearly has its purposes, but the downside has led to most architects leaning on it as the primary means for damage control. It all points to a growing shortfall among architects: those with experience are commonly too time-strapped to run through the details of engineering drawings, and the younger architects are too ill-equipped to pick up on structural translation inaccuracies. The problem is one of complacency: architects have grown comfortable with having finishes hide the slack. The complacency, however, is less a problem in itself than it is cause of a subtler ill: that of a growing lack of structural refinement running through architectural development at every level. Structure has gradually become subservient to architecture.

That subservience is no loss if architecture for one is about the mere appearances of things. If it means somewhat more, however, and is seen through Greek roots with its definition as techné, architecture will be understood as the revelation of technology as poetry. And we would see how the product of architecture, originally integral with the process of its making, has been undermined, and that we have failed to recognise the processes of construction as integral to that of architectural expression.

The understanding of techné is the first step to knowing what differentiates between the picturesque and the critical.

Picturesque architecture begins with the disguise of one's work behind the make up of applied finishes. For some critics, it begins much sooner and at the inception of space. In either case, the end result is one that lends a veneer of appropriated civility, to a work divorced from the deeper search more associated with the act of making and to that which forms the basis for critical architecture.

Critical architecture will inevitably engage both the aspects of finished product and of evolving process in its final formulation of aesthetics; work which reveals some manner of its construction in its end appearance, at the same time as it answers those questions of its specific use, maintenance and functions. The nature of such projects occasionally lead architectural design to profound refinements even before the act of enclosure is even considered: structure may or may not be revealed as an inextricable part of its making, but it will inevitably extend the integrity of its architecture. The processes which critically guide architectural work, aside from integrating structural concerns with architecture, can make structural considerations an inseparable part of design management. The need to constantly check and collate architectural intentions with structural interpretations should result in structural drawings forming a vital part of the architectural package. This means that initial structural drawings have to be checked and amended with all the fine-tuning required of an architectural finish, to effect final documentation in structural format. Apart from the benefit of this step of design development being taken out of the architectural drawing process, it takes the heavy and legal responsibility of architectural and structural coordination out of contractor hands, putting the task in its rightful place: with the architect. The result would be architectural drawing packages with considerably fewer building sections compared to most, since these would already have been documented in the engineer's drawings. Aside from the fact of fewer architectural drawing produced, this process of design management actually produces more accurately documented projects. It weights design development at the beginning of the entire process and emphasises structural refinement over the expertise of the picturesque, being the architectural finish.

Just as architecture requires a structure for its support, engineering has its own poetry, one grown from its multitude of concerns, of tolerances and state of finish, and of spatial quality and proportion. It is only through working intimately with structural issues, both large and small, that we understand how to develop the architecture of engineering and in doing so, lay claim to working our architecture holistically, spatially and critically.

i still find this high-rise the most interesting among all within a sea of high-rises in Singapore. despite being completed many years back, it still stands ahead of its time. some have viewed otherwise, but i think it is deserving of its list of received awards.

ingenious way of facade treatment. i love the fact that it isn't purely a skin for aesthetic reasons but was functionally driven. each face has its reason for how it was done. and everything seems to gel in very well.

one of my highlights of taking bus 124 on my way to orchard road is passing through this building. i never get tired of marveling over such Architecture.

checking out tickets for my next getaway. i'm thinking Tokyo or maybe NYC for new year's.

think I will have to postponed my trip to Rome a little longer. still requires a little more thorough research.
